about debbie stevens
I have been practicing yoga since my daughter, Jen, was 2 years old, as I was trying to get back in shape after pregnancy and childbirth. When a friend and fellow yogi left Roanoke, VA in 1988 I took the teaching yoga wand and waved it. I have been teaching ever since and loving it. I have taught children, Moms-to-be, and moms and babies, college students and seniors into their 90’s. No matter who I teach yoga to I learn something, tapping into the power of being myself and sharing loving kindness.
I trained at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, MA. This style is gentle and breath-focused. I have also trained with Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley in Yin Yoga and meditation. I enjoy flows, especially ones learned with Rolf Gates, author of Meditations from the Mat. As I have taught so many years, classes and students, I am registered with the Yoga Alliance as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher at the 500 hour level, or E-RYT 500.
I left a stressful job as a Social Worker to teach yoga fulltime. For 16 years I owned The Yoga Center, recently reconfigured as 108 Yoga Works. I wanted to downsize and simplify my life, so I am teaching yoga on my own, without running a studio or managing other teachers. I teach fewer classes and give more of myself.
My classes are an opportunity to check in with yourself and then give yourself what you need. I act as a mirror to help you get where you want to go, or where your body directs you. I like to keep the atmosphere light while supporting proper alignment and conscious breathing. I like to learn new things and share with others. I invite you to join me in the journey that is yoga.
